Florence Li is a community worker deeply committed to anti-racist and anti-oppressive principles and practices and currently serves as the Interim Executive Director at the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNCTO). She has worked with immigrant communities in several capacities, from providing frontline support at a settlement agency in Scarborough, to teaching conversational English to Mainland Chinese students in Hong Kong. Previously a project coordinator with CCNCTO, she worked towards empowering racialized youth to see themselves as community leaders through a workshop series called Ripple Remix 2011.
In 2010, Florence co-founded the Youth Coalition Against Maclean’s (YCAM), an ad-hoc group that formed in reaction to the “Too Asian”? article published in Maclean’s magazine (November 2010). YCAM has engaged in mobilizing, fundraising, lobbying and raising awareness through educational outreach. Florence has since participated on panel events at universities across Ontario discussing issues such as racism in the media and media responsibility.
She is currently part of the Solidarity Committee Against Anti-Asian Racism, working to challenge racism in media and higher education and most recently completed a 3-month internship with Anima Leadership, assisting on a Racism Free Workplace Strategy project on inclusive workplaces. Florence also moonlights as a freelance journalist writing about community issues such as worker’s rights and newcomer experiences.
She is still “Too Asian for Maclean’s.”
